Team wellbeing at Kenilworth’s oldest pub - The Famous Virgins & Castle
"a focus on wellbeing helps attract and keep talented and skilled people"
We are a 16th century pub in Kenilworth and part of the Caviar & Chips Hospitality Group. We employ 34 people in the pub including management, kitchen team, hosts and cleaners.
Wellbeing in our team is paramount to how run our business. We know that having a focus on wellbeing helps attract and keep talented and skilled people. Investing in wellbeing means we have happier, more relaxed and confident people in our team and this translates to their home lives with their families. We also consider physical, mental and financial wellbeing, so we have a holistic approach.
Wellbeing is part of our business strategy - we have a people strategy in place in our business and this covers the key themes of:
- Mental wellbeing
- Physical wellbeing
- Team
- Individual
- Leadership & culture
- Organisation and environment
- Developing wellbeing initiatives with our teams
We involve our team in the development of our wellbeing programmes and we also involve the community. We provide a voluntary day where team members can contribute to local charities and we measure the impact we have to local projects. When we recruit new members to the team we ensure they have a 'buddy' to help them get used to the new roles as well as get used to how things work in the pub and our guests. Each member of the team has a wellness action plan which means that they reflect on what things about their home and work life can induce stress and anxiety and help them develop techniques to manage and mitigate these. Every six months a team member has a personal development review and this includes their current role, future career aspirations and their own personal development. We also include training and development sessions on building resilience, dealing with pressure and recognising stress. Every week we have an internal email called Wellbeing Wednesday that reminds members of the team to look after themselves and each other and encourage an environment of open communication where it's ok not to be ok.
